Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 musical film directed by Mel Stuart, and starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The movie is based on the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. In the movie, Wonka Bars are chocolate candy bars produced by Willy Wonka and given away as part of a promotion to find the golden tickets, which give the holder a chance to tour his mysterious factory.
In 2005, a new film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released, this time directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. The movie features a redesigned Wonka Bar, which is taller and thinner than the version seen in the 1971 film. The Wonka Bar promotion was also reintroduced, with golden tickets hidden in five special bars, giving the winners a tour of the factory and the chance to win a lifetime supply of chocolate.
The Wonka bars from the 2005 movie were also sold commercially, and featured a blue and silver wrapper with an image of Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. The bars were described as "scrumdidlyumptious" and were flavored with milk chocolate and peanut butter cream. They were produced by Nestle under license from Warner Bros., the studio that released the 2005 movie.
